On 27 August 2009 in Stara Lesna, the International Committee of Slavists established the Corpus Linguistics Committee, following a motion tabled by representatives of a number of Slavic national corpora, who participated in the PALC 2009 and Mondilex 2009 conferences held in Łódź and Warsaw respectively. The proponents of the motion included members of major corpus linguistics teams from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

As the Committee is still being formed, all individuals and institutions are welcome to join it. We invite all slavists and linguists from Slavic countries, and in particular representatives of Slavic national and parallel corpora. We will continue to accept new members during conferences and events organized before the final meeting at the next Congress of Slavists in Minsk to be held in 2013. The first conference of committee members representing Slavic corpora will be held in November 2010 in Warsaw.

AIMS AND SCOPE OF THE COMMITTEE

  • Dissemination of corpus linguistics research through regular meetings and conferences
  • Support for new corpus initiatives, such as new Slavic national corpora
  • Integrating morphosyntactic annotation systems by increasing the interoperability of tagsets and annotation schemas
  • Fostering parallel Slavic corpora initiatives
  • Promoting the use of corpora in Slavic linguistic and literary studies
  • Support for the development of diachronic corpora and digital literary databases
  • Exchange of information and corpus-based research results in the field of information retrieval and extraction systems and machine translation systems
